A break up is always hard to deal with. If you and your partner have lived together for a very long time, it will be especially difficult. Getting back to anything resembling a normal life can take quite a while. We will try to give some advice on getting over a break up below.

Very often when someone is involved in a bad break up, such a person would try to shut the world out. He would stop taking calls from friends and hide when friends knock at the front door. This is the best way to make sure that it takes a very long time to get over the break up.

The more time you spend on your town brooding over what happened, the more you will relive the break up in your mind day after day. As you spend time with others, you will literally force your mind to start concentrating on your immediate surroundings and on what other people are talking about. This will force you out of the darkness into which your mind descends when you are alone.

Something else that will do you a lot of good, both emotionally and physically, is to either join a gym or start playing some sport. Physical exercise is an excellent way to force your mind to be in the present moment and not dwell on the past unnecessarily. The increased fitness levels that come with this will also do your health in general a lot of good.

It might be very difficult to do, but you should start to date again as quickly as possible. As long as you don’t do anything rash while on the rebound this will only do you a lot of good. Its fine to tell the other person that you just came out of a break up and that you are not interested in a serious relationship at the present moment.

If you really want to do something that will force your mind back to the present and help you get living again, go on an extended trip. There are very few things that can focus the mind on your immediate surroundings like traveling. When everything around you is new and interesting and you have to concentrate on bus and plane schedules and trying to decipher a foreign language, you will find it hard to dwell in the past for days on end. You will be making new friends as well and it is well known that many holiday romances have led to something more serious!

To really get your mind off the sadness of your immediate past, join a cause. Any cause. Once you see how many other people there are in the world that don’t have enough food to eat, or are homeless, or are struggling with severe emotional or physical problems, your own sorrow will often fade in comparison.

Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, you still find yourself unable to get on with your life after more than six months. Then it is time to get professional help. There are numerous support groups out there where you can meet people who went through the same situation as you. There are also therapists with professional training to help you deal with your loss.

Getting over a break up will take time. Only time will always heal all wounds. When you look back one day, ten or twenty years from now, you might realize that what happened was necessary to lead you to the true love of your life.
