The Issue Of Low Self Esteem

Published Date Author: Jane Sullivan Daniels, October 20th, 2009

The problem of low-self esteem is one of the top problems in the modern world. Psychologists say that a persons self esteem is the value they place on themselves and how they value their own self worth. It seems reasonably simple as a concept but if you really ask yourself, how do you value your own worth, you will see that it is not quite as simple a question as it may sound upon first hearing it.

The reason why most peoples self esteem goes up and down like a roller coaster is because in the modern world we live in, everyone is constantly comparing themselves to someone else, and it always takes far longer to build self esteem up again than it does to knock it down. One small phrase from someone else can be enough to bring our self esteem down completely, particularly if that person is regarded highly by either your social crowd or society in general, and building it up again takes lots of time and ideally, a good mentor.

Contrary to what many books will tell you, simply waking up and saying I feel great every morning isnt really going to do all that much to help your self esteem. Low self esteem is usually a result of bad experiences and negative memories. In order to genuinely increase self esteem, we need to explore each of these negative memories and all the insufficiencies you believe you have, and straighten them out individually. An expert is required for this, and with this very sensitive subject, an expert will have to have been there and done the whole low self esteem / depression thing and can speak from experience.

If you think that low self esteem is only a case with people who are not successful in life, you are wrong! There are several extremely successful people who have a very low self esteem, and that makes their life hell!

There is a lot to be learnt about this important and sensitive topic and the best person to learn it all from would be someone who has been there themselves and has come out of it a happier person. If you can find a person like this, it would definitely be worth having a talk with them if low self esteem is a problem for you.
